Background And Details of Bosnia School Project Raffle 1/149th
Texas Army National Guard Family Readiness Group (FRG) Organization
The
1/149th Texas Army National Guard is based at Ellington Field in
Houston Texas. The unit is
supporting the multinational Stabilization Forces (SFOR) 13 and 14.
Approximately 60 soldiers were deployed for SFOR 13 and arrived in Bosnia
in early spring. The remaining
soldiers will be deployed to support SFOR 14 this fall.
There will be some overlap as several of the soldiers are supporting both
rotations. The
1/149th Family Readiness Group (FRG) is made up of the families of
the National Guard soldiers. The
purpose of the group is to provide support and assistance to the family members.
One means of doing this is to initiate and participate in projects
related to the mission of the deployed unit.
This particular project is the Bosnia School Project. Bosnia School
Project Overview
The
soldiers and families are sponsoring a small rural school near Tuzla, Bosnia.
The school has about 75 students between the ages of 6 and 11 in four
classes. The school is very poor,
and has virtually nothing to work with. The
soldiers are working on the physical plant aspects, i.e. the plumbing, building
repairs, etc. The
school has a total of a half dozen books, one copy of six different books for
reference purposes only. There are
two issues being addressed by the FRG: One,
the personal items the children use at their desks such as paper, pencils, pens,
glue, scissors, etc. The families
are putting together individual packages containing adequate supplies for one
child for the year, similar to the supply packs for U.S. children going back to
school. The
second issue, is the classroom products used by the teacher to present the
materials. This includes textbooks,
maps, pencil sharpeners, three hole punches, etc. The textbooks are among the most important resources we can
provide the children. Naturally, we
need to find textbooks in their own language, at appropriate levels. We
have located a textbook publisher in Sarajevo that seems to have what we need.
A representative from SFOR, along with a translator, is working with the
teachers to determine the appropriate textbooks for the children.
We are in the process of setting up an account with the publisher to fund
the purchases. The Raffle
To
finance the purchase of the textbooks, the FRG is holding a raffle.
All proceeds over the cost of the prizes will go directly to purchasing
the necessary books. If there are any funds remaining, they will be used to
purchase other classroom supplies as noted above. The
prizes to be awarded are: Deadline
